As many of you are most likely aware Mr T and I spent a fabulous romantic break in Lake Como actually, seven days in total. I thought I’d share a few pics and highlights with a rough travel guide for any of you lucky devils spending 48Hours in Lake Como, Italy.
Rent a place on the lake: First and foremost if you’re visiting Lake Como, you simply must rent a place on the lake side, failing that go up one of the surrounding hills just high enough so you get a cracking view without a huge steep journey to climb every time you want to pop home. You can find accommodation to suit all budgets from reasonable rentals on Airbnb to the more grand hotels such as Villa Serbellino
Swim in the lake: The water of Lake Como is clear and such a magnificent colour that changes depending on the time of day and the level of cloud, when the sun is shinning the water looks a very bright Mediterranean turquoise and you can see right the way to the bottom, you can also see the famous lake fish swimming around happily. It’s almost an unwritten rule that if you visit one of Italy’s great lakes you have to jump in and swim (at least once).
Lunch and relax at the Aurora Hotel, Lezenno: Set at the side of the lake Hotel Aurora dates back to 1912 and boasts a detached waterfront restaurant and dock for enjoying watersports or simply lounging with a cold one or eating a spot of lunch with fabulous views over the lake and surrounding mountains. Only 10km across the water from Villa Calotta and 17km from Castello di Vezio castle Hotel Aurora is the perfect place to enjoy lunch before heading out for an afternoon of adventure.
Visit Villa Carlotta: Jump on a ferry to Villa Carlotta and while away an afternoon in the grand historic villa and equally if not more impressive botanical gardens that stretch for miles out back. There are plenty of places to sit and enjoy a picnic in the gardens if you decide to skip lunch and pack our own provisions. Here is a full recap on our trip to Villa Carlotta.
Go shopping in Bellagio: With the ferry being so reasonably priced you can afford to hop around the lake zig-zagging from side to side, alternatively you can hire your own small boat so you can whiz around at speed living the George Clooney dream! Bellagio sits on the tip of the peninsula that juts out into the centre of Lake Como known as “the jewel of the Lake” Bellagio is a great place to shop, dine or simply wander around admiring the historic streets lined with boutiques, restaurants and local artisanal shops, everywhere you turn Bellagio is pretty as a picture! You could easily spend a whole day in Bellagio alone.
