Keeping well as the seasons change is often a challenge. But if 2020 taught us anything, it’s that we cannot take our health for granted and should really focus on making healthy choices to strengthen our immune system going into winter. With this in mind, here are some simple wellness tips to help you stay cheerful and feeling good this winter.
Wellness Tips To Lift Your Mood
1. Eat well
Although an obvious one, it can be a struggle to have a balanced diet. However, trying new recipes can be a great way to lift your mood and get creative. A balanced diet is also key to preventing illness, maintaining good health, and good energy levels. Review your diet: add fruits, vegetables and stay conscious of comfort eating. Try to limit your consumption of sugar, fatty food, alcohol and don’t forget to stay hydrated!
2. Regular check-ups with a holistic practitioner
If your budget permits, scheduling regular routine visits with a local holistic health practitioner will help to keep you feeling good. Regular check-ups will enable your practitioner to detect any issues with hormones, digestion and nutrition. Think preventive rather than reactive!
3. Get out into nature
Exercise is a great booster for the immune system and getting out into nature is a tonic for the soul. Plus, the more you move, the lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other debilitating diseases. Moreover, daily exercise does more than keep your body strong, it boosts your self-esteem, improves sleep and does wonders for your mental health!
Consider walking or swimming as these are lower impact and slowly build up your routine. Before you embark in any exercise routine, do make sure your feet are well cared for and you have appropriate footwear, the more orthopaedic the better, they need to fit well and support your feet.
4. Don’t be a stranger
Loneliness can be a lethal enemy: it can lead to depression and mental health problems. Research shows that lonely individuals are more likely to have higher levels of stress hormones that can cause multiple problems that ultimately inhibits your immune system. Spending time with people can prevent loneliness, stress, and anxiety – so don’t be a stranger.
Do your best to stay connected with family members or find hobbies that will allow you to make new friends and take full advantage of modern technology to help you with this.
5. Get a Vitamin D supplement!
Why’s Vitamin D so important? We interviewed Nutritional Expert Keely Berry in a previous post where she stated…
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that regulates the intake of calcium, magnesium and phosphorous, whilst also supporting a naturally effective immune system – helping to protect against infections.
The nutrient works to increase the production of antiviral proteins and also decreases ‘bad’ cytokines, the immune molecules that can cause dangerous inflammation in the body – it is our body’s inflammatory response that can lead to critical conditions, rather than viral infections themselves. So, best to stock up on a good Vitamin D supplement over winter!
