When it comes to your home sometimes you need a fresh season can give you that much needed motivation. Winter is coming and before we realise it, the colder days will be here and the darker nights. So how best can you prepare your home? As we will be spending more time indoors hibernating through the cold months, it pays to be prepared. Here are 6 ways to get your home ready for winter …
Winter is coming…
Declutter
Many of us feel a surge of inspiration to declutter during the spring time as we set ourselves the challenge of getting ready for summer. But now is the ideal time to start decluttering once again as you don’t realise that over weeks and months, clutter can build up once more. Sometimes a turn of a season can give you the inspiration to also take into account a change with things like furniture, or to box things up away for another time. Store items that you don’t need in winter in a self storage building or in the loft. You can then keep things out of sight and out of mind, but still have access to them when you need them again. This is ideal for things like clothes you want to keep for next season.
Give Your Home a Deep Clean
The next thing you can consider doing would be to clean your house for winter, give your home a thorough deep clean. Again we tend to do this before spring and summer, but winter is the time of the year that you’re likely to spend the most time indoors, so why not have a beautiful clean environment? It could be the perfect time to tackle some of those ongoing jobs like cleaning windows, moving furniture and vacuuming and mopping behind them, and keeping up to date with your cleaning schedule. You will feel better for it, and it may help you to come up with a new routine to keep on top of it all the way through to spring next year.
Get Your Home Ready For Winter
Finish the DIY
If you’re anything like Mr and I you will have been putting off the DIY throughout summer. Our home renovation has come to a stand still and we’ve been enjoying the sunshine! As the seasons are changing this is the ideal time to pick up your paintbrush or start to tackle whatever DIY projects you’ve been putting off.
Insulation for Hibernation
Heating your home throughout winter can be costly. Firstly, you need to consider ways to make your home more energy efficient. Then if you haven’t already switch to a green energy company like bulb. Switching to green energy means that the energy that you do use will be coming form renewable resources, so it’s much better for the planet. There are lots of soft furnishings that you can introduce into your home that will help to keep the heat in. You might also want to invest in heavy curtains to insulate your window area as much as possible or add a thermal lining to your existing curtains. Perhaps you could invest in a large rug to insulate your floorboards?
Prepare the Exterior
The exterior of your home will need some love as well, especially before the harsher weather kicks in. It might be time to clean up patios and decked areas, get rid of any debris, and clear driveways and paths. You could also look into protecting exterior elements of your home from cold weather, such as adding extra insulation to pipes ahead of freezing temperatures or checking for issues like cracks in brickwork. One often-overlooked area is roof maintenance—ensuring there are no loose or damaged shingles can prevent serious problems when heavy rains and winds arrive. Taking care of these tasks ahead of time could help you avoid unexpected home repairs when the weather takes a turn for the worse.
Reorganise Your Home
Finally, it may be time to look into reorganising some of the areas of your home like the drawers and also your wardrobes. Just like you may do in the spring, the winter is the ideal time to ensure things are organised. It might also be a good idea to look at switching out your summer clothes and to start looking at adding your winter bits once more. This helps you to be prepared when all of the sudden the weather changes.
“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.”
― Edith Sitwell
