When it comes to an easy plant-based recipe, this warming Apple and Pear Crumble is as cosy and decadent-tasting as it is quilt-free and easy-to-make. It consists of only five ingredients and can be made in fifteen minutes. While it’s nutritious enough to be eaten for breakfast, as a pick-me-up snack after a yoga practise or long walk, or even served as a side with bigger meals, it’s also sweet enough to be enjoyed as dessert. Plus, it’s gluten, dairy, and refined sugar free!
Mid-Winter Plant-Based Recipe: Apple and Pear Crumble
- 1 apple, diced
- 1 pear, diced
- 1 tablespoon ghee (or coconut oil)
- A dash of cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons walnuts, finely chopped
- Dice one apple and one pear.
- Place the apple and pear in a medium-sized frying pan with one tablespoon of ghee (or coconut oil) over medium-high heat.
- Add a dash of cinnamon and stir it up until the ghee (or coconut oil) is melted and the apple and pear are coated in cinnamon; stir occasionally, cooking until the apples and pears are soft and golden and the ghee (or oil) begins to caramelize with the juices, about 10 to 12 minutes.
- While the mix is cooking, finely chop the walnuts (if you’re using whole walnuts).
- Once the apple and pear are cooked, add the walnuts, stirring until evenly coated and the walnuts are just warmed, about 1 minute.
If you decide to enjoy this Apple and Pear Crumble plant-based recipe as a dessert, you may want to add whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, allowing the cream to melt slightly over the top. No matter how you decide to enjoy your crumble, this dish packs a heavy punch of complex carbs, fibre, healthy fats, and even protein, which is why it’s a fun choice for an after-yoga (or workout) snack.
Even better, apples, pears, walnuts, and cinnamon all have anti-inflammatory properties, in a letter to her older sister Cassandra, Jane Austen once wrote, “Good apple pies are a considerable part of our domestic happiness,” but what could make anyone happier than an apple crumble variation that’s also brimming with healthy benefits?
