We enjoyed a whirlwind trip to Sheffield, the city of steel in Yorkshire for a day packed with vintage shopping, impromptu #worldweekUK festivities, exploration and general Tom foolery. Birthplace to some seriously impressive talent including Astronaut Helen Sharman OBE, musician Joe Cocker, the legendary Def Leppard, Human League, comedian Michael Palin, Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker not to mention the delectable Sean Bean, Sheffield has a lot to boast about. My dear friend Helena spent the day out in Sheffield. Here are a few pictures from our day and our recommendations:
Winter Gardens: straight of the train we walked up the hill to the Winter Gardens. The winter gardens is one of the largest temperate glasshouses to be built in the UK during the last hundred years, and the largest urban glasshouse anywhere in Europe. It is home to more than 2,000 plants from all around the world.
Brunch at Tamper Coffee shop: We followed a recommendation from a local and headed to Tamper coffee shop for bagels and coffee, which was utterly divine and set us up for a day of shopping.
Vintage Shopping: In the city centre the best place to head for vintage shopping is Devonshire Street and West Street and the many connecting roads between the two. There you’ll find a vast array of vintage shops from those stocking mostly 1980’s/ 1990’s. The greatest vintage shop we found was Mooch vintage where we picked up some darling hats perfect for winter. The service in-store was impeccable and they stocked a great selection of ladies and gents pre-1970’s clothing and accessories. As well as vintage shops you’ll also discover cafes, cute dogs, bars and great Asian eateries around the Devonshire Quarter.
Christmas Market: In the heart of the city is a pop up Christmas Market selling everything from hot sausages to handmade knitwear. At night the market looks lovely all lit up and is perfectly positioned next to the high-street shops to have a quick browse.
The Town Hall + Sheffield Legends: Take a minute to pop into the Town Hall and admire the historic building. You might also like to take a moment to stand amongst Sheffield’s legends, this is Sheffield’s answer to Hollywood’s walk of fame. Sheffield was birthplace to some seriously impressive talent including Astronaut Helen Sharman OBE, musician Joe Cocker, the legendary Def Leppard, comedian Michael Palin, Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker not to mention the delectable Sean Bean.
Afternoon tea at Andrews Cafe: We stopped for a spot of afternoon tea at Andrew’s Café where we wolfed down a homemade mince pie with cream and sipped our afternoon tea and laughed at the days events. Andrew’s Café had a fine selection of home baking to choose from and proved the perfect pitstop.
The Cathedral: With the sun setting just after 5pm in the winter we ended our day at the beautifully lit up Cathedral before heading to the train station to head home.
Insider tip: Don’t leave Sheffield without picking up a bottle of Henderson’s Relish! (It’s kind of like Worcestershire Sauce but better)
