Planning an interior overhaul? Since Mr T and I tied the knot in September we’ve been planning some home renovations, hopefully you’ll be seeing some fabulous before/ after pictures popping up in 2017! To fuel our interior inspiration I caught up with Mark Taylor the Director of Mark Taylor Design to get the insider scoop. In this post you’ll find Interior Design tips from Expert Mark Taylor Design…
Interior Design Tips
Tell us a bit more about your business…
I set up Mark Taylor Design 20 years ago, as I had a passion for design and making spaces work. We are a boutique interior and furniture design business. All of our staff are senior and specialists, so we can advise people holistically on how to create extraordinary spaces. Our wonderful team are skilled in joinery, manufacture, fitting, interior design and lighting.
What inspired you to set up your business…
Having worked for other people in my earlier years, I wanted to put my own personal stamp on design and furniture in people’s homes. We thrive on being given an open brief, where the client talks to us about how they want to feel in a space, and what experience they are trying to create and then we create and engineer that space into a beautiful, bespoke home or office.
What are your top three tips to consider when planning an interior overhaul?
Holistic Interior Design
- How do you live in the space? – How do others want to live and when do you all clash?
Natural Textures
- What do you want your space to feel like? Look beyond the traditional places for inspiration – We encourage people to take cues from nature, textures they find in all sorts of places, colours and shapes that might be linked to things industrial, antique, human, and then we weave those into our plans. Taking someone’s family history and embedding it in our designs is very exciting and important for some families too and we can research this with our clients as part of the journey.
Relaxing Spaces
- What functions do you need it to fulfill? Entertaining, relaxing, family communal space. This might seem like an obvious question, but as our work is truly bespoke, if for example, someone needs a beautiful kitchen and living space that will have a floor durable enough for their son to skateboard through it, we’ll take that into account.
Is there one moment that stands out as your greatest design accomplishment?
What comes to mind is a villa in the South of France, where I designed many of the interior spaces. The design challenges were all about making vast spaces work as a warm, cocooning and protective home not as a showpiece. All the furniture had to be oversized. It was a stunning project.
How do you see your business developing in the next 5 years?
We want to continue to develop interesting and innovative ways to use different materials together. To encourage our clients to think about different ways to use their space, to be more ambitious and experimental, whilst still retaining a beautiful environment.
I hope people become less afraid of colour. We’ve had a long period of neutrals and greys, but as current fashions change – the catwalk is full of florals at the moment – we hope to see some more interesting designs and colours emerging. Fabric designers have some fantastic fabrics available, and we want to encourage our clients to be bold with their ideas.
Thanks for Mark for taking the time to share his pearls of wisdom, hopefully this will bring a little inspiration to your interior projects. Visit Mark Taylor Design for more interior expertise.
