Here are a few pictures from our trip to the Hippie Market, San Juan – Ibiza: Mr T and I spent a glorious seven nights on the Balearic Island of Ibiza over the Easter week. We had such a splendid trip discovering just some of the hidden gems on the island- better known for all the wrong reasons.
When you think of Ibiza- images of ‘Brits abroad’ from documentaries like ‘Ibiza Uncovered’ might spring to mind, however as we discovered there is so, so, so much more to this beautiful Island.
Ibiza has a increasing organic food scene, a thriving array of agrotourism and eco farm stays, miles of breathtaking unspoilt scenery, beautiful beaches and its legendary hippie markets- to name just a few highlights.
The San Juan Market is one of the most authentic on the Island selling handmade products made by the villages, including food, preserves, olive oil, soaps and artwork of every variety. You can also expect to see lots of espadrilles, leather goods, cotton and vintage dresses.
The market has retained the hippie essence with a gathering of people still very much in touch with nature making natural products. Around midday the music cranked up with singers playing a few rock ‘n’ roll classics as well as a few bongo tunes.
The atmosphere was very laid back and vibrant with people sitting outside cafes and restaurants. San Jaun boasts Sabores Naturales one of Ibiza’s greatest organic cafes and the incredible Café Giri (more on this gem to follow).
We spent a lovely day milling around the market, stopping for lunch and sitting in the square, making friends with a friendly little dog. I wore a cotton mxi dress from Zara, vintage Levi’s denim shirt and my new favourite (super comfy, wide fit) sandals from SimplyBe.
It seems to me that Ibiza is an island of contradictions, on the one hand there’s the much publicized San Antonio packed with party monsters and on the other there’s the creative flowery folk dotted around the small rural villages and hippie markets coinciding with nature. Whatever your vibe, Ibiza is an Island sparkling with hidden gems.
