Keto-curios? You might have heard of the term ‘ketogenic’ being used a lot recently in magazines or on wellness lifestyle websites like goop. I wanted to share with you The Ketogenic & Hypotoxic Diet book by Olivia Charlet. As well as my personal experiences with the ketogenic diet.
What does Ketogenic mean?
The ketogenic diet is not a ‘diet’ in the traditional sense, more a different way of eating. You don’t need to go hungry. In essence the ketogenic diet is a way of eating based on drastically reducing your carbohydrates (sugars, starches and grains) and where your calorific supply comes from fats (lipids).
The distribution of calorific intake in the ketogenic diet is different to standard diet recommendations, in which carbohydrates represent half the calorific intake. The ketogenic diet is: rich in fats (good fatty acids) balanced in proteins (including plant proteins), very low in carbohydrates.
Author Olivia Charlet is a nutritional therapist and practising naturopath living in France. Olivia is passionate about nutrition, toxicology and all non-invasive natural health alternatives. Olivia has been studying the effect of nutrition on our health for the last twelve years and offers the ketogenic diet plan to many of her clients.
Key foods
Thankfully the ketogenic diet does not mean going without or going hungry. You are actively encouraged to an abundance of delicious low carb foods and recipes such as coconut oil, oils, oily nuts and seeds, golden milk, eggs, fermented foods, meat, fish, vegetables like cauliflower and courgettes, seaweed, to name but a few.
What does hypotoxic mean?
To be beneficial to our health the ketogenic diet must be hypotoxic. Fatty meat and full fat dairy and major sources of toxins and pro-inflammatory. So it is vital that the ketogenic diet is also hypotoxic, saying yes to fats but not just any kind of fats. There are three easy principles to follow, consume proteins that are carefully chosen and moderately consumed, no dairy or gluten, eat mostly organic ingredients.
The benefits
Mr T and I have both adopted much healthier eating habits recently, focusing on ketogenic principles. Adopting the ketogenic diet has meant we are both much less tired and as a side bonus, I have also lost some weight. The ketogenic diet has meant that our blood sugar levels are more stable as we no longer get that drastic spike after eating lots of carbs, which is great as between us we suffer with autoimmune diseases and Type 1 diabetes! The ketogenic diet can help fight many diseases linked to modern eating habits such as dementia, autoimmune diseases and cancer. It really has revolutionised our daily lives.
Olivia’s book explains clearly the ketogenic diet principles, including the health benefits, customised diet plans for vegetarians, vegans, for anti-inflammatory and weight loss as well as a some gluten and dairy free recipes. If you suffer with auto-immune diseases or just want to shed a few lbs and feel more energised, I couldn’t recommend this book highly enough.
