Author of The Clever Guts Diet Book, Dr Michael Mosley begins the book with an experiment he performed on himself. Mosley swallows a small camera to take a look inside and follow the journey through his own gut, bowel and beyond…The camera follows the journey of digestion illuminating some of the deepest, darkest places that we know very little about. Mosley gets into the nitty-gritty of common diseases of the bowel like Coeliac disease, Gluten sensitivity, Lactose intolerance and IBS.
The Microbiome
For me this chapter was the most fascinating! As the camera passed through the small intestine after eight long hours, it finally reached the large intestine home to the Microbiome. He delves into a the Kingdom of the Microbiome, looking at the bacteria, funghi, viruses and simple primitive animals called protozoa that all reside in there. Mosley explores what we know already about the Microbiome and how it effects our entire existence! The Microbiome regulates body weight, regulates our entire immune system and converts our undigested food into hormones and chemicals. Research into the Microbiome is still in the early days, a study area called ‘psycho-biotics’ looking at how our Microbiome effects our brain is an exciting new field that will no doubt illuminate more about the important gut-brain connection! I’d highly recommend reading this book if you’re interested in improving your overall health, it’s a must-read for anyone suffering with gut related issues like IBS etc…you’ll gain a greater understanding of what’s happening inside you’re body and learn ways to repair and heal. This book contains lots of scientific facts, studies and is very well researched, it is written in a fun and entertaining manner that is easy to digest (sorry about that).
