If your kitchen is anything like ours, it seems to attract unnecessary plastic packaging. Even as relatively conscious consumers on a mission to clean up our act and live more sustainably, the plastic still appears! We have however, managed successfully to make some excellent switches to plastic-free kitchen essentials, so I wanted to share a few plastic-free alternatives to help you along your way this plastic-free July.
Plastic-Free Kitchen Alternatives
Plastic-Free Sponge: Handmade in Egypt, the LoofCo Washing-Up Pad is 100% biodegradable and a long-lasting alternative to plastic washing-up sponges. Utilising a slice of natural, Egyptian-grown fibre it can be composted when worn out, saving waste in landfill.
Plastic-Free Scrubbing Brush: This sustainable dish washing brush is great, it’s made from untreated beech wood with biodegradable Mexican fibre (or tampico) bristles. The brush comes with four replacement heads so you don’t have to buy a new brush every time, saving money and reducing waste.
Washing Up Liquid: A bit of a tricky one. I’m yet to find a totally zero plastic alternative, however you can go almost plastic-free. Ecover offer a refill service and you can check your nearest refill location on their website using the store locator. Refilling means you only need to buy the bottle once or you could take your own glass bottle. The Ecover bottle is made using recycled plastic and can be recycled, but better to keep filling it up instead of buying heaps of plastic!

Natural Multi-purpose Cleaner:
I’ve been making a multi-purpose cleaner to wipe the surfaces. It’s ridiculously cost-effective, non-toxic and means zero plastic as you can use a re-usable bottle from Baldwins. It’s super safe to have around children, kind to your skin, lungs and health in general. Effective at cleaning greasy stains, surfaces, general all-purpose cleaning Smells really fresh and lovely
Switching to plastic-free alternatives is a process, start with switching one thing at a time and you’ll gradually see the benefits of using long-lasting natural products, the wooden cleaning products certainly look a lot prettier by the kitchen sink.
