As we step into being a much more conscientious society, the small steps we take at home can make a huge difference.
The overall goal of your garden is that it should be somewhere you can easily relax and enjoy the rewards of all your hard work. When you’re creating your tranquil area, it can also be done with one eye on the environment too.
So, What Is Eco-Gardening?
Simply put, eco-gardening is a way of making your garden more self-sustainable by reducing the energy and water the space uses up, improving air circulation where possible, promoting recycling, attracting all kinds of wildlife and being less wasteful.
But what exactly can you do to make your garden more sustainable, without it costing you the earth?
1. Harvest Rainwater
In the UK we get a large amount of rain each year, so why not use it to benefit your garden. It’s incredibly easy to upgrade the way you water your bushes and shrubs with an irrigation system. They’re super simple to install and will not only help you save the environment but will also help to save money on your water bills each month!
2. Water Your Plants At The Right Time
Whether you decide to splash out on a new irrigation system for your eco-garden or not, it’s important to water your plants and other produce at the right time of day. Watering during hot periods, such as lunchtime and early afternoon, will waste water due to evaporation and will be less beneficial to the plants themselves. To keep your plants at their best, water them early in the morning or late at night.
3. Choose Drought Resistant Plants
If you’re looking to overhaul your garden, think about what will work best for the space you have. Why not take a look at low maintenance drought-resistant plants, as these reduce the dependence on manual watering during any dry periods we might have. Thus reducing the amount of water your garden requires.
4. Plant Trees To Improve Air Quality
When it comes to other types of plants, you should try to introduce some trees in if you can, as these will work towards improving the purity of the air around you. If you have the space, larger trees such as Conifers, Beech trees and Magnolia are great! Having air purifying plants and trees in your garden if you live in an urban or heavily built up area is super important, not just for you and those in your home, but for everyone around you too.
5. Get Creative With Compost
Composting is a great way to do your part for the environment. Recycling green waste, food waste and any leaves that fall in the autumn is the perfect way to get started. By doing your part, you’ll also be keeping things out of the ever increasing landfills too!
DIY compost is often incredibly moisture retentive and rich that is perfect for the garden – your plants will benefit from it hugely and you’ll also save on buying it from the shop. The choice of compost bins is pretty much endless. Make sure you head to the internet and do your research before picking your first one out – it may take a couple of attempts to get it right.
