The December full moon, otherwise known as the Cold Moon is shining down on us, encouraging us to get cosy, set intentions and grow as the new year approaches. The pinnacle of the Luna cycle is the full moon. It’s face turning to us once a month is a constant illumination throughout our life.
A full moon happens on day 14 to 16 of its steady 29.5 day orbit around Earth. It’s enduring presence inspires our fears and imaginations. People of the past feared the full moon, believing it brought about madness and untold dangers. Even now research has suggested time again that there are more emergency calls around a full moon. Our pagan ancestors would have revered it, honouring it as a God. And any farmer’s almanac would tell you of the increased growth of their crops during a full moon.
The energy of the full moon rises from the day before the moon reaches its fullness and lasts until the day after. Full moons amplify our emotions. They are a great time to manifest our desires, cleanse our minds bodies and spaces and release old habits. The Cold Moon is an ideal time to practice setting intentions, if you have any confusion in your life or you are lacking direction. The Cold Moon is also a wonderful time to manifest a new romance, new jobs and start new projects.
This moon is also known as the Cold Moon. This is the time of year in the northern hemisphere when the nights are still long and cold. We crave warmth and glowing fire light. In pagan mythology the Holy King and the Oak King have battled over the seasons during the winter equinox. The Oak King triumphed and from here on the days will get lighter. But the long winter still lays ahead of us.
Cold Moon Astrology
This is the last full moon of the year, it resides in Cancer and is likely to be a very emotional moon energetically. The moon governs our emotional responses, Cancer is one of the deepest and most emotional and caring signs. With Cancer moon there can be a tendency for melancholy and deep thinking but the elevated energy of Cancer moon encourages us to get in touch with our softer emotional needs.
We might feel a need to contact old friends or look through old photos, reminisce about the past in order to satisfy our need for familiarity and comfort. The word “hygge” is a Danish word used for all forms of warm comfort, log fires, hot chocolates and warm socks. This feeling of hygge will be a focus for many of us during the full moon.
There will be a distinct sense of optimism with this moon and a sense that life will get better.
Cancer can be a needy, sometimes clingy energy however, so while we may feel a rainbow on the horizon we can still feel a little insecure in ourselves and our place in a relationship, family group or tribe.
Create Your Hygge Kit
It’s a good idea to create a hygge kit for a cancer full moon. Choose your favourite happy box sets, fluffy blanket, wooly socks and favourite foods, these are the perfect way to spend the dark night when the Cold Moon is at its peak. Take some time out to feel cosy and loved. If you are alone, nurture and pamper yourself, do things that make you feel special and loved. If you are in a partnership it is a great time to take a bath together. Share some intimate time and focus on togetherness.
