☺️Hope you lovers had a good Valentine’s Day (or at least treated yourself a bit)

💚Yesterday was filled with things that I love, for that I feel entirely grateful and thought I’d share, as we discovered a hidden gem…

🎨Mr Turner and I ventured out to see the Mr Turner exhibition at @whitworthart gallery.

🌱As we walked to the gallery we cut through Platt Fields Park and stumbled across a sunken Shakespearean Garden.

This hidden gem is truly a botanical treasure, a real-life secret garden just a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of Wilmslow Road. Sheltered by majestic trees, you’d never know that it existed from the road.

All the plants used for the garden are ones mentioned in Shakespeare’s work. The garden is neatly arranged into four quadrants, an Elizabethan-style parterre (formal bit) a human sun clock and performance space, and a productive patch of veg with apple trees. The surrounding banks were equally rich in horticultural delights, boasting a newly planted herbaceous border, a shady fernery, and hibernacula. If you’re in the area, I’d recommend taking a stroll around and sitting for a while to just enjoy the calm.

🥗We enjoyed lunch in the Whitworth cafe before heading to the exhibition.

🖌️The exhibition was a series of landscape prints, the Liber Studiorum (translating as ‘Book of Studies’) so showed Turner’s working line drawings, prints and watercolour paintings. I was happy to see a few pieces featuring the hills of Scotland, including the Peat Bog.

🍀It is also with great pleasure that I introduce to you, the latest arrival, our giant Monstera has a fresh fully unfurled leaf.

2025 has been an unfathomable mix of contrasts, NY

2025 has been an unfathomable mix of contrasts, NYE was warm, New Years Day brought record-breaking floods, this week we’ve seen the mercury sink to lows of -7 degrees. The climate is changing and not in a gradual, linear, predictable way, it’s extreme, erratic, leaving chaos and tragedy in its wake.

The mental summersaults required to truly digest the chaos being caused by extreme weather shown on the news within a weekly period would require Olympian-gymnast-level skill.

The magnitude of the bigger picture, the reality of the unpredictable nature of climate change is overwhelming. There’s denial, fear of what comes next, what will future generations have to live though? there’s anger and the base level instinct to point a finger at someone, who’s to blame? - the oil companies, the government? - and the helplessness of feeling like no matter what small changes we make, that ultimately it will take a global shift in law and infrastructure to even begin to make a dent on solving the ever increasing problem.

The only way I have found to be able to process the mixture of emotions is to take a moment for introspection. To look beyond fear, anger, blame and focus on understanding the interconnectedness of all things. Nature is the most powerful force, to quote Thich Nhat Hanh ‘The environment is not outside of us, we are the environment’- none of us will single-handedly solve the changing climate, no one government, law or policy- it will take a great collaboration across the globe.

Recognising that small changes can make change, that small groups can have a big impact and aligning with nature has helped me to find some level of inner peace.

Climate change is arguably a product of ego and greed and a misunderstanding of nature. By embracing self-reflection, and acknowledging the interconnectedness of all things, we can move beyond blame toward harmony and a healthier planet.
