Autumn on the allotment is the time to prepare for the coming season, enjoy all the colours of autumn, plant a few bulbs and pick any remaining fruit or veg still remaining from the last season.
I love this time of year when the leaves on the trees turn all the majestic colours of autumn and make a crispy carpet on the floor ready to kick up and crunch through.
About a month ago I was fortunate enough to secure a small plot of land to look after just a short distance from home. I thought I’d share a little glimpse of us hard at work this weekend, document our progress, the changing of the seasons and any pearls of wisdom I pick up along the way.
As a novice gardener I feel very lucky to have a small plot within a much larger space that is managed by way more experienced green-fingered wizards than myself, meaning I can quiz people for knowledge and pick up little hints and tips for what I should be doing at this time of year.
This weekend we tidied up the plot, pulled out any weeds, cleared fallen leaves, turned the soil to a spades depth, emptied one of the compost bins and added the fresh compost to the raised beds. Head here to read more about tools and some of the best leaf blowers that you might want to try out if you’re needing to tidy up your garden sometime in the near future!
Whilst turning the soil we discovered some mystery bulbs so we re-planted them in the ground so only time will tell what they are, we suspect onions but really don’t have much of a clue!
Before we left we picked some of the remaining apples still dangling from the trees in the orchard, which I shall be using to make this years Christmas chutney.
Hope you enjoyed seeing a little glimpse of life on the allotment.
