A day out in Bronte Country, Haworth- England: As the Lake District has Beatrix Potter; the little historic town of Haworth has the Bronte’s. Similarly to the Lakes, Haworth is surrounded by outstanding natural beauty with views of the Yorkshire moors spanning as far as the eye can see. I took a day out with Father dearest to visit Haworth and enjoy the sights, sounds and of course Fish & Chips! Haworth Railway: If you arrive into Haworth at the right time of day, you’ll catch the sound of the steam trains pulling into Haworth train station. Some of you may recognize the railway station from the famous 1970’s classic film ‘The Railway Children’? We stood on the platform as the loud chugging of the steam engine pulled in, the sounds, smell and excitement of passengers was just magical, there’s nothing quite like a good old fashioned choo-choo-train. Over the years, the Railway has appeared in many TV and film productions including Yanks, Sherlock Holmes, Last of the Summer Wine, Treasure Hunt, Sons and Lovers, Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, Poirot, The Royal, A Touch Of Frost, Songs Of Praise, and Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Antique + Vintage shopping: The main street in Haworth is cobbled, pretty steep and lined at either side with Victorian stone buildings. The incline is softened however as you bob and weave your way up the hill leisurely browsing the cafes, vintage and antique shops along the way. Bronte Museum: At the top of the hill you’ll find the Bronte Parsonage Museum. The Parsonage, built in 1778-9 was the lifelong home of the Brontë family. It was opened as a museum in 1928! Inside you’ll find treasures from the clothing the Bronte’s would have worn to how they would have lived. Sadly no cameras were allowed inside the house, so you’ll have to settle for a picture of me posing on the steps outside instead, lucky you ey?! The Apothecary: The Rose & Co. Apothecary is out-of-this-world fabulous! The Victorian pharmacy is where the Bronte’s would have come to collect their pharmaceutical necessaries. Today the Rose & Co apothecary sell everything from handcrafted soaps to reproduction vintage clothing and lingerie. The inside of the shop hasn’t changed a bit and the Victorian signage and décor is beyond impressive. The Black Bull: The Black Bull has been around for over 300 years and is famous for one of it’s patrons Branwell Bronte. The pub is known for its Award winning range of good traditional ales and extensive home cooked menu. You’re probably going to need a drink by the time you’ve made it up the hill and browsed every single shop! We opted to reward ourselves at the top of the hill with Fish & Chips from the cafe and a bag of sweets from the Old- fashioned sweet shop. What could be better than exploring a beautiful historical town, Pops on arm, with a bag of humbugs in hand? If you’re after a real slice of Yorkshire, besotted with history and love vintage shopping then Haworth is place for you! “I remembered that the real world was wide, and that a varied field of hopes and fears, of sensations and excitements, awaited those who had the courage to go forth into it’s expanse, to seek real knowledge of life amidst it’s perils.”
