It has become increasingly apparent that if there is a stand to be made against climate change, it needs to be made right now. While it might feel like the direction of the earth’s climate and humankind’s role in it feels out of your grasp, there are steps you can take to help fight climate change. Here, we’re going to look at how you can change or pivot your career to help fight climate change.
Find a career in green tech
First of all, you should look at the jobs that might allow you directly to directly reverse climate change. There are sites out there that can help you find your place in companies that are developing climate tech, regardless of your skills. Whether you have experience in marketing, sales, software engineering, data, design, or operations, there are companies that need you to help keep them running and reach new people. The main difference is that your skills are being put towards businesses that are directly involved in the climate sector. Online publications such as Climate Tech VC or Carbon Brief are a great place to start looking for jobs.
Get involved in the fight
Even if you can’t work directly in one of the companies developing the tech or solutions that might help us directly reverse global warming, you can certainly play a role in helping to spread the good word about the efforts that are out there. There are plenty of environmental nonprofits that you could take a look into joining. See which ones have any bases of operations near you or allow remote working and get involved. Just remember, just because they’re nonprofits doesn’t mean that everyone working there is going to be a volunteer. They will have plenty of paid workers and you could become one of them.
Teach others
There are skills that might not seem related to healing our planet, but you could be surprised. Careers that generally help to improve wellbeing and teach new skills can also take on a pro-climate slant. If you have recently earns your yoga teaching certification online, for instance, there are various ways to use it to pivot your skills. This can include getting involved with one of the climate strike meditations that are becoming more popular, or teaching yoga at a retreat for those feeling climate anxiety.
Take a stand for the climate in your current job
You don’t necessarily need to find a new job to start making planet positive changes. You can work to try and increase climate awareness in your own workplace. Whether it’s by talking to your colleagues and employer, or by joining the various networks of like-minded people in your industry to better collaborate as a group in giving your field the push that it needs, every effort helps. Join a Climate course to learn more about the circular economy and how you can better structure your own company to be more environmentally sound. Climate change awareness can be raised, no matter where and how you work, even if that’s in a small way.
Regardless of your skills, experience, and choice of field, you can make a difference. Hopefully, the tips above help you do just that.
