Remember back when we celebrated the launch of the Royal Apothic perfume at Anthropologie on the Kings Road? well, that was when we first met the fabulous Ellie and Anna of the Flower Appreciation Society! Since then we’ve been marvelling as Ellie and Anna spread their weird and wonderful blooms throughout London at events, at parties, in shops and on Helena Bonham- style-icon-Carter’s head!
We’re very proud to share The Flower Appreciation Society as this weeks dream business. Here Ellie and Anna share their story, tips and a little insight into their growing business!
Q 1. Tell us a bit about your business..
We are “not your average florists” Our style is natural and wild. We like to let flowers speak for themselves. We are based in Hackney and work from our lovely studio. We do weddings, events, parties, press events, bouquet deliveries and lots of workshops.
Q 2. What inspired you to start your business?
It all happened by mistake. We met working behind the bar of a pub in Hackney. Anna was in the middle of a floristry course and Ellie had just been made redundant and consequently spent the summer helping her mother (also a florist) with weddings. We bonded over our mutual love of all things floral and the seed for the Flower Appreciation Society was sewn. We started doing the flowers at the pub where we worked every week and then friends weddings. Slowly but surely we saved up enough money to buy a camera, build a website etc….
Q3. How do you see your business developing in 5 years time?
We are planning on doing a book this year, which is very exciting and a big development. We would love to have a product range, printed textiles, perfume, soap etc..
Q4. Can you offer any readers thinking of starting their own business any pearls of wisdom?
Be prepared to work incredibly hard and not make much money but get great satisfaction from running your own business. Start small and let is grow slowly and gradually.
