When it comes to gardening, not everyone loves getting their hands dirty. However, there aren’t many people that don’t enjoy relaxing in a beautiful garden. There are lots of easy ways to create a low maintenance garden to sit and relax in, even if you’re like me and live in the city! In this post I’ll share a few tips to how to create a low maintenance garden that is an easy solution to anyone who just doesn’t want to dedicate the time to gardening…
Plant Pots
While having your garden framed with dirt-filled with flowers and shrubs is lovely, flower beds typically take way more work to keep the weed and pest free. You can pick up a range of pots, in different colours which instantly adds interest to your garden – and are easy to maintain. Once you have potted up the plants that you like, you are free to move them around your garden – which is perfect if you are finding that suddenly there is too much or too little sun for them. It’s also a great way to add instant impact to an otherwise dull space. We have a little space outside our home which is an otherwise unloved area. I’ve been gradually adding pots to add a pop of colour and it’s so lovely to watch them grow.
Plants
When it comes to choosing plants, you should try to get the right mix. Some hardier plants that last well all year, and others that come back every year. Where possible until you are a dab hand at gardening, it is worth purchasing plants that are already started off. You won’t have to wait for them to sprout and be left with a barren garden while that happens – or run the risk of not being successful in your efforts. Always read the labels and check how much light the plants require. If your garden space is shady then make sure you choose hardy plants that like a shady spot. I’ve chosen lots of evergreen plants, that way they don’t die off and look sad in the winter months.
You should always plant a range of herbs if you have the space. They grow very well in pots and depending on the size of your pot, you can use them for cooking and you can take them inside when the harsh winter arrives. Flowering herbs will also give more pollinators to help your garden flourish.
Fake It
Grass is one of those things that actually takes a lot of effort to maintain. You need to ensure that you are mowing the lawn regularly in the spring and summer months, and if it starts to get patchy and die in some places, then you have to replace parts of your lawn – and work out why it is happening. More and more people are replacing their grassy lawn with LazyLawn. It is easy to maintain to the point you can hoover it, and will always be green.
Plan Your Garden
If you have the luxury and the time you would do well to plan your garden out in advance. This will make sure that you don’t buy too many plants, or you are left halfway through your project and change your mind. It doesn’t have to be exact, spend some time on Pinterest and get some more inspiration for low maintenance gardens.
Your garden needn’t be something you get annoyed by, a few little swaps will make it easy to manage and enjoyable all year long. And, always remember that a garden doesn’t need to be done in a single weekend, you can make changes slowly over months to make sure that you get it exactly how you want.
