Here’s a look at the Jonple Lifestyle App that has been keeping me motivated. The start of the year can be a struggle when it comes to energy, it’s cold, you’ve got the post- Christmas slump and the lack of daylight is challenging. This year I’ve vowed to get out of the house once a day (at least) to get as much daylight as my work schedule permits. I’ve also vowed to stay as active as possible, despite the restrictions due to COVID. I would typically be enjoying swimming and yoga classes; however, the restrictions have meant thinking outside of the box.
My personal approach to health and wellbeing is based on holistic principles. I believe that in order to maintain a healthy balance, mind, body and soul must be nourished. At the start of January, I was asked to review the Jonple App, a wellness app designed to focus on nutrition, fitness and psychology, so it sounded like a great match for my approach to wellbeing.
Jonple has been created harnessing the science and psychology behind health and fitness and how it can be used to create long-term solutions to help people live healthy. Jonple’s co-founders aimed to create an app that cuts through the fads and offer a service built upon three areas; nutrition, fitness and psychology. Jonple was launched in July 2020 so is a relatively new app to come to the market.
Staying Motivated with Jonple
From the outset Jonple offers you a test to gain an understanding of your basic fitness level, testing you jogging on the spot for 30 seconds etc, from there it recommends a fitness program based around your abilities. This acts as a fun way to stay motivated even when the gyms are closed and try a few new excercises that you might not be doing in your usual routine. You can connect Jonple to Spotify, so you can work out to your favourite music. There’s also a nifty section that includes some impressive challenges, like climbing Mount Snowdon (19,008 steps) or climbing Big Ben (334 steps) which are a fun way to clock up your step count and challenge yourself. I haven’t climbed Mount Snowdon (yet).
Nutrition
As Jonple is such a new app they are still working out some of the tweaks. I found the diet options to be a little limited and restrictive. When filtering the meal plans, I found that the only food intolerance listed was ‘vegetarian’. This was disappointing, as it meant I had to manually pick and choose from the recipes, reading each one to check if it contains gluten/ dairy. So, I felt like I didn’t really get the full experience of the app. I’ve been informed that this is an area that is still being developed, so I imagine that this will be improved in the future. Each recipe is however clearly marked with allergy symbols, so you can see at a a glance if it contains gluten etc. In the end I chose to input my own meals. Going through the process of inputting my own meals was a valuable exercise though, as it meant I was more mindful about what I was eating and considered the carbs, fats and proteins that my meals contained.
Psychology
The ‘psychology element of the app, is a passcode protected area called ‘All About U’, this is a designated profile where you can input how you’re feeling, a digital journal if you like. You can also make notes of ‘hijacks’ so things that might have derailed your wellness journey, which I thought was a good idea for keeping track of the things that hinder your happiness or motivation. Within this part of the app, there are also helpful articles about sleep and motivation. You also have access to controlled breathing exercise videos, which were a particular favourite. Great for taking a moment and relieving anxiety.
