The NHS has advised that to minimise the spread of infection we all need to be washing our hands with soap and water for 20 seconds and to repeat this throughout the day. The soapy water actively breaks down the lipid layer of the virus and renders it inactive. So, washing your hands can prevent germs from clinging to your skin and in turn reduce the risk of viruses entering your body or being passed on to other surfaces and spreading. However, all this hand-washing can come at a cost. Personally, I have been vigilantly washing my hands throughout the day and have been way more conscious of doing a thorough job. Unfortunately, this has resulted in having very sensitive dry skin and slight eczema between my fingers- ouch!
