The New York Cafe, Budapest can be found within the high-end Boscolo Budapest Hotel. The Boscolo Hotel group boasts a portfolio of 15 luxury hotels across Europe. The Boscolo Budapest Hotel formely known as the New York Palace first opened its doors in 1894. The building and its interior ooze Italian- renaissance charm. We escaped a rather hot day in the city to indulge in a spot of lunch.
As you enter the hotel the large marble-floored atrium is overwhelmingly beautiful, natural light pours in through the glass ceiling. The contemporary floral display and plush velvet seating in the centre of the atrium provided the perfect place to sit and gasp at the decadent grandeur of such a fine building.
At the turn of the 20th century the New York Café (New York Kávéház) was the most beloved coffee house in Budapest attracting the cities artists, poets and literary crowd. Today the New York Café provides the perfect place to indulge in true European luxury, marvel at unrivaled craftsmanship (seen so rarely these days) and sample a bite to eat from the delicious Hungarian-Italian menu.
It’s very difficult to believe but after World War II, the once famous café fell into disrepair and it served as a sporting goods shop! The café reopened in 1954, under the name of Hungária, but it wasn’t until 2006 that the New York Café was restored to its original splendor.
We sampled the Goulash, Asparagus Soup and had the café’s namesake ‘New York’ Ice Cream cup for dessert, all of which were just perfect for a light lunch on a warm day in Budapest.
If you’re into seriously ornate interiors, love to marvel at history and enjoy nothing more than a fine meal or great cocktail with friends, then the New York Café is for you!
“Every dreamer knows that it is entirely possible to be homesick for a place you’ve never been to, perhaps more homesick than for familiar ground.”― Judith Thurman
