Every year the RHS Flower Show brings Tatton Park to life, green-fingered visitors, exhibitors and horticultural hedonists travel from far and wide to marvel, compete and get lost in a world of divine displays, mind blowing blooms and giant vegetables.
2015 brought a rather rainy RHS Flower Show, it almost goes without saying that a little precipitation couldn’t damped the spirit of the British gardeners. We headed down to Tatton Park on Sunday to see the exhibitions, buy a few little treats and brave a makeshift picnic in the rain.
A personal highlight were the water gardens, landscaped to create trickling water features the Pond Company had captured and recreated a scene that could quite easily have been found on a walk through the untouched British countryside.
I was rather glad I decided to wear my wellies and raincoat as the grey clouds rolled over the Cheshire countryside. The RHS Flower Show always blows me away as so much preparation and precision goes into every single display, some gardens even included huge trees and I can only imagine the amount of digging that went into temporarily planting them.
The show gardens varied from the weird and wonderful, being a little bit of a traditionalist when it comes to gardening as with art, I often veer away from the ‘over conceptual’ for me, if a garden is colourful, fun, pleasing on the eye and somewhat functional then I’ll most likely love it no matter what the concept behind the design, it must be very difficult for the judges to choose which gardens win the gold prize.
Inside the floral marquee was an ocean of colour featuring every type of flower conceivable, heaven! Some flowers were large beyond reason and with Sunday being the day the flowers on display are sold off there was an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation as revelers selected their choice treasure. This year I treated myself to a rather large climbing rose bush for outside the house.
Despite the rain clouds we pulled out our picnic cloth (thank fully it was waterproof) and muddled along enjoying our picnic (washed down with a hot chocolate, it was chilly!)- in true British fashion we has a fabulous day despite the rainclouds.
I’m already excited for next years show!
