When it comes to choosing a mattress, comfort and support are top priorities. However, it is also worth considering the environmental impact of your mattress. Simba are the first sleep brand to be B-Corp certified demonstrating that they’ve made sustainability a core part of their mission. Here’s my review and a closer look at how Simba Mattresses balance sustainability with performance and comfort.
The average mattress takes more than 100 years to biodegrade, there’s 167,000 of them going to landfill every year, and only 14% of mattresses get fully recycled every year according to The National Bed Federation.
Materials and Construction
Simba mattresses are made using a blend of natural and recycled materials, which is a major highlight for eco-conscious consumers. The foam layers are crafted using a mix of CertiPUR®-certified foams, which ensure that harmful chemicals are minimised in the production process. One of the standout materials in Simba’s construction is its natural latex, which is sustainably sourced and biodegradable. This not only contributes to the mattress’s comfort but also helps reduce its overall environmental footprint.

The top cover of the Simba mattress is made from OEKO-TEX® certified fabric, ensuring it is free from harmful chemicals and is gentle on the skin. Simba also uses recycled steel for its spring system, which is a thoughtful step toward reducing the amount of waste and supporting a circular economy.
The fabric for the mattress is super soft and feels like really lovely quality, there’s obviously work to be done to make it more environmentally-friendly- but they’re working on it, which is good.
The Hybrid® mattresses are designed for ultimate comfort, featuring foam with patented technology. However, they also carried a significant environmental footprint. To address this, the company ensures that all the foam used is CertiPUR® recognised, while maintaining the same signature level of comfort. They are also working towards incorporating more recycled materials into their products. By 2025, the goal is to reduce carbon emissions by 50% through the development of new, responsible foam technologies.

Recyclable Packaging and Shipping
Rather brilliantly, the Simba mattress comes rolled up neatly in a compact cardboard box. The mattress is compressed, rolled, and delivered in a box, which makes it both convenient and easier to transport in an environmentally friendly manner. The packaging is made from 100% recyclable materials, which is an essential part of reducing the carbon footprint of the product. Ours arrived, carried it upstairs and unboxed it, then flattened the box and popped it in the recycling, very simple and convenient!
Sustainable Manufacturing Practices
Simba places a strong emphasis on ethical and sustainable manufacturing practices. The company works with partners who share its commitment to environmental responsibility. While specifics about the factories’ energy efficiency or carbon offset programs aren’t extensively detailed, Simba has demonstrated a clear commitment to reducing its overall impact on the planet.
Durability and Longevity
Sustainability doesn’t just mean using eco-friendly materials—it’s also about ensuring that the product lasts and doesn’t need to be replaced prematurely. Simba mattresses are known for their durability. The combination of high-quality foam and pocket springs offers lasting support, which means that the mattress doesn’t lose its shape or comfort over time. This longevity reduces the need for frequent replacements, which obviously helps to reduce waste in landfills.

Mattress Refurbishment
When a mattress is returned during its trial period, the Simba team puts it through a rigorous testing and inspection process. The mattress is then sanitised to hospital standards before being offered back to customers at a discounted price. In 2023, they successfully saved 15,620 mattresses from ending up in landfills. This effort earned them a commendation in the Reducing Waste category at the BRC’s Climate Action Showcase.
Mattress Recycling Service
One of the more forward-thinking initiatives Simba has introduced is its mattress recycling program. Customers who are ready to dispose of their
We’re already making an impact; in our first year alone, we recycled 6,550 mattresses. -Simba
Simba mattresses can arrange for it to be collected and recycled. This is a great step towards minimising landfill waste, as mattresses are notoriously difficult to recycle due to the mix of materials involved.

Verdict
When it comes to comfort, the Simba mattress checks all the boxes- it’s soft and provides the right amount of support. Simba mattresses offer an impressive mix of eco-conscious materials, ethical production, and innovative recycling programs. While there are always areas for improvement, like increasing transparency around carbon emissions or incorporating even more renewable materials, the brand is undoubtedly taking significant steps in the right direction. For eco-conscious consumers looking for a high-quality mattress that doesn’t compromise on comfort or environmental impact, Simba is a solid choice.
