A lot of us dread the idea of spring cleaning. Thinking it’s going to take forever, that we’ll need to dedicate an entire weekend to it, and that it’s going to involve buying lots of cleaning materials and tools. Thankfully, that’s not the case. With a proper plan of action and decent preparation, you could make spring cleaning a whole lot easier and faster. So here are our tips on how you can spring clean your house from top to bottom.
Decluttering your home
One of the first things to do is declutter. This is easier said than done, so we’ve got a few tips to help:
- Start small and tackle one area at a time so you don’t feel overwhelmed with the task of decluttering your entire home. Start with one drawer or one shelf to get the ball rolling.
- If you haven’t used something in one year or more, consider donating it, throwing it out, or even selling it.
- Use all of the storage solutions at your disposal. Remember that walls can be a great place to hang things or install shelves for even more storage.
- Store things in boxes and stack them high to make better use of your space.
Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be beautiful or believe to be useful

If you’ve never done a full spring clean of your house, or if it’s been a couple of years since the last time, then you may want to be extra careful in older homes due to the presence of asbestos.
This is only really a concern if you’re doing a deep clean of old and forgotten areas such as a crawl space or attic. You might disturb materials that contain asbestos, so you’ll want to contact an asbestos removal service to help you get rid of it.
If your home was built several decades ago, then we highly recommend contacting a service to help you identify the potential of asbestos before you do a deep clean.
Preparing your natural cleaning products and tools
You don’t need a different product for every room in your home. So here are a few quick tips to help out:
- Use natural cleaning solutions if you want to save money, time, and space.
- Stock up on tools like cloths, brushes, a duster, a mop, and a vacuum cleaner.
- Wear protective gear if your home is particularly dusty, or if you’re going to be using harsh chemical products.
- Organize your cleaning supplies and tools in a box or caddy so you can take them with you around your home.
Don’t overcomplicate things when it comes to cleaning products. Keep it simple and you’ll thank yourself later.
Start from top to bottom (literally)
If you’re not used to cleaning a home, then you might not know about starting from the top and moving down.
The reason you do this is because dust from higher areas (such as shelves and ceiling fans) will naturally fall onto furniture and items lower down. If you start cleaning from the bottom, then the dust will settle on surfaces and areas that you’ve already cleaned.
Once you reach the bottom, remember to vacuum or sweep floors to get rid of all the dust and debris so you don’t end up kicking it around. For hard floors, use a mop to thoroughly clean it, starting from one edge of the room and moving over to the opposite side.
Spring cleaning ultimately gets easier when you do it more often and if your house is already fairly clean and tidy. It’s going to take a lot of effort the first time you do it, but we’re confident that everyone can give their house a full clean with enough dedication!
