As most of you will know by now, I’ve been decluttering over the last few years, blame Marie Kondo. This major declutter has changed my wardrobe choices pretty drastically. Not only have I reduced the number of items in my wardrobe, but I’ve also reintroduced myself to key wardrobe essentials. Stripping back to wardrobe essentials has made daily life much simpler.
From classic sandals to a versatile denim jacket, essentials are the kinds of pieces that go with every outfit. I wanted to share a little summer style inspiration. So here is a list of some summer wardrobe essentials that will see you through, not just this summer but for years to come…
Capri Trousers
Favoured by the late Jackie O, the Capri Trouser is a piece that will go with almost any summer top. Jackie O famously wore her white Capri Trousers with a plain black tee and her signature oversized sunglasses. When it comes to summer essentials you want pieces that can be worn from day to night. Capri Trousers look good with just about anything, from an oversized linen shirt to nautical stripe tee and will take you from dockside to dinner in style.
Denim Jacket
You are unlikely to need too many jackets over the summer, as hopefully, the weather will be warm enough to do without. But for summer, and the times that you may need a jacket, then choosing a denim jean jacket is a wise move. It can be good for when the weather is a little cooler and can look good dressed up for an evening out too. A decent denim jacket will last years and be a very worthy investment piece.
Classic Sandals
Keeping comfy and cool in summer is pretty high on the agenda. A classic sandal is a great choice for summer, ideally with a strap around the ankle and then a strap over your foot. They will keep your feet cool, but also mean you can roam around in comfort. I always trust Clarks for sandals, they’re comfy, do half sizes and also a wide fit. You could also opt for a classic style, like those from Saltwater Sandals. Go for a neutral colour like tan leather or white, then you can wear your sandals with your Capri Trousers or a cotton summer dress.
Carryall Tote
When summer is here, you tend to need a few more things in your bag than normal. You’re likely to have sunglasses, water bottle, suncream, and a hat all in your bag. And if you want to be spontaneous at the beach or for a picnic, then having a bag that will fit it all in is what you need. So look for a large carryall tote, and you’ll have plenty of space for all that you need. A Straw Basket Bag will go with almost every outfit. Alternatively you could invest in a faux leather tote, like this reversible one from Ralph Lauren, which gives you even more outfit options.
Beachwear
For the beach you’re going to want a swimming costume or bikini. My personal preference is anything vintage-inspired as I find the styling way more flattering. For Luna is a great place to get vintage-inspired swimwear. Summer is also a great time to get bold with some accessories. It’s always good to rock a little boho style at the beach, think laid back Ibiza vibes (North of the Island, obvs). A fine necklace can look good, as well as earrings and silver anklets, that can look great when you’re visiting those famous Hippie Markets. Just make sure that they are made from quality materials if you are going to be wearing then in the sea or a swimming pool.
Shirt Dress
For summer days in the office, holidays or heading out for evening drinks, a shirt dress is a great summer wardrobe essential. They are pretty versatile as they can be dressed down for the beach with flip-flops or worn for work with a tote bag and sandals. A shirt dress is a really simple style, that will help to keep you cool too.
Linen
I’ve reached the stage now when I get excited to see the linen collection come in-store. For me this officially marks the start of the summer season. You can’t beat a loose linen shirt in summer, it truly is a summer wardrobe essential. Linen will keep you feeling cool on those hot days.
White Plimsolls
A simple pair of white plimsolls will take you a long way. They will keep you feeling comfortable and looking summer-ready. A simple plimsoll is a great choice for busy days, as well as lazy weekends. There are lots of simple white plimsolls to choose from, but invest in something comfortable and quality like Spring Court or Veja.
Cotton Summer Dress
Is it even summer without the mention of cotton summer dress? A cotton summer dress will keep you cool, and can be dressed up and dressed down. Cotton summer dresses can be great for throwing over swimwear on the way to the beach, as well as for going into work.
